Britney Spears’ Weird, Parent-Controlled Life

Britney Spears may be getting married soon, but because of a legal conservatorship arrangement, she may literally need legal permission from her father and attorney to do so.

Britney Spears is used to the spotlight by now. She’s had it shine in her direction for years, and in 2008 it almost got the best of her when a series of public meltdowns and entanglements threatened to derail not just her career, but her entire life. It was in that year that her father, Jamie, and attorney Andrew Wallet were granted control of Spears’ financial concerns. The conservatorship is a reminder to Spears of the mis-steps of her youth. And, to clarify, that conservatorship extends not only to matters of money, but also to medical decisions and decisions regarding her career. Spears can, literally, not make legal decisions about those things.

But now, at 30 years old, Spears is perhaps a bit more settled and ready to regain control of such things. She’s recently received a marriage proposal from Jason Trawick, but the conservatorship makes even that a decision that is not entirely Britney’s. Notes Marck McBride, a Beverly Hills divorce lawyer, "Britney can do anything she wants under the conservatorship, but that doesn't make it legal. If she did get married without her dad's permission, it would be a legal nullity, as in null and void – as in an illegal marriage. She would first have to get dad Jamie's permission. In the face of a ‘no’ from Dad, she would then have to ask a court to override her dad's decision, which almost surely wouldn't happen."

Interesting. It’s fair to note that the conservatorship will be reviewed in January, which may make the whole marriage situation a moot point. According to McBride, however, the lifting of the legal arrangement may be the last thing Britney should really want. Notes the lawyer, "If the conservatorship is lifted, Britney has to face her legal woes. Right now, she's getting her cake and eating it, too. She's able to generate tons of cash but not have to face the legal music."
